ESL Program

Beginning Fall 2019, you can earn an ESL Certificate or an ESL K-12 Endorsement.

The English as a Second Language (ESL) Program includes two different tracks: ESL Certificate or ESL K-12 Endorsement. All new ESL courses are available online with other required courses currently available on-campus. This program is accredited by the Higher Learning Commission.

ESL Certificate – 15 Credits

For anyone looking to expand ministry opportunities in your church, your community, or overseas:

  • Learn how to teach English to children and adults.
  • Study how cultural & linguistic diversity can impact relationships.
  • Look in-depth at the English language & ESL methods.
  • Practice teaching through a hands-on ESL Practicum.

ESL Certificate Courses

ESL K-12 Endorsement – an additional 19 Credits

For education students and K-12 educators:

  • Expand your understanding of how to work with English language learners (ELLs) in the K-12 classroom.
  • Learn how languages are acquired.
  • Gain a deeper understanding of the English language.
  • Practice methods of teaching ELLs through an ESL Practicum and Student Teaching.

Iowa teachers earn an additional teaching endorsement. Non-Iowa educators can use courses towards continuing education credits.

ESL K-12 Endorsement Courses

The deadline to register for the Fall 2019 semester is August 19, 2019.
