Campus was buzzing in the middle of June when 48 high school students from 11 states came to our Jump Start program.
Jump Start is the opportunity for high school sophomores, juniors, and seniors to take a college class for credit. Students took one of three classes this year— Personal Evangelism, Introduction to Philosophy, and Genesis. The classes are arranged so that when students headed home on Friday afternoon, their homework and tests were all done.
The week kicked off on Sunday, June 9, with registration, get-to-know-you games, and chips and salsa in the Eagle’s Nest. Students attended class from 8 a.m.–3:30 p.m. each day. After class, students were given study time before dinner and evening activities. Each evening students were able to get to know other students through various activities and make friendships with future classmates! Tuesday night the Admissions staff took all 48 students to a cook-out at Saylorville Lake. Wednesday night Noah Kephart organized a competitive game of kickball on Pyche Field. The week came to a close after students took their finals Friday morning. Below are some students’ thoughts from their time on campus.
What I really enjoyed about Jump Start (and Faith!) was how homey, comfortable, and accepted I felt. I never felt awkward or out-of-place! In fact, all week I kept thinking, "I can picture myself being here as a student." The warmth and joy I felt all week being on campus, in class, with other kids was as though I could hear God saying, "This is where I want you, Katie. This is where I want to use you." Katie Parsons
Jump Start for me was an amazing week full of opportunities I never would have gotten had I stayed home. I grew close to a few friends I knew I would see again in the fall and even met my future roommate. Also, it was a real turning point for me because it really confirmed my decision to go to Faith. I have absolutely no regrets about attending Jump Start! Shayna Goeman
Everything here was wonderful and I’m glad I came. I enjoyed Dr. Cole as we learned about Genesis. I can’t wait to come back next year for a different class! Malisa Bounkhong
The week was lots of fun. I really grew and felt so challenged spiritually by my class. Matt Cole
It was a lot of fun learning and building friendships with students who will be attending in the fall like me. I took the Personal Evangelism class, and it was such a blessing. The class not only gave me knowledge but we also went into the world and experienced evangelism firsthand. Jump Start was an amazing week, and I would go every year if I could! Reagan Kurfman
My favorite part was being able to fellowship with other believers that are my age. I also enjoyed playing Frisbee. That was totally a highlight! Evangelizing in the afternoons was also a blessing. Anna Cleghorn
I really enjoyed the class and discussion, experiencing a small taste of college life, and the snacks my professor’s wife brought to us each day ? I appreciated the friendly environment here at Faith of both the staff and the students. It made me feel at home here, to a large degree, during this week. Christina Snyder
My favorite part of the week was hanging out with new friends and going door-to-door witnessing. Annie Gustafson
The Jump Start week at Faith was such a time of learning for me. The staff was cheerful and friendly, and the environment changed my perspective that college was boring or scary. Given the chance, I would definitely do it again. Grace Gimben
I really enjoy the Christian atmosphere, and I want to continue to have that through college years. Carli Quam
