Season Review
The Faith women’s basketball team finished the season with a 16 – 12 record. This is the first winning season for the women’s basketball team since 2002-2003. Faith also set another high mark by making it to the NCCAA DII regional championship game for the first time since the 2000-2001 season. Faith returned five players from last year’s team. Among the returners were last year’s First Team All-Region Meghan DeBerg, and First Team All-Region/All American Honorable Mention Lindsie Poorman. Faith added 6 new players made up of 4 freshmen and 2 upperclassmen. With more basketball experience, Faith started the season with some high hopes of being very competitive and having a good shot to win the region.
Faith started the season with a win at Union College in Lincoln, Nebraska, which was a good sign due to the outcome of that game the previous year. Faith had 11 first semester games, 3 of which were against NCAA D3 or Junior Colleges. Faith ended the semester at 6 -5. The biggest wins in the first semester included wins against Ozark Christian College and Manhattan Christian College. It had been a while since Faith beat either of those teams. Faith went 4-3 in November and 2-2 in December. The Lady Eagles started the second semester where they left off winning four games in a row. Faith went 4-2 in the month of January, and finished the month of February at 6-5. Faith never had a losing month, which was a big step forward from the previous year. Faith had close losses to region foe North Central with a nine point loss at home, and a four point loss on the road. Faith did beat Trinity Bible College and Providence College to secure the number two seed for the region tournament which was played at Faith Baptist Bible College.
Faith started the region tournament with a big win over Trinity Bible College. Faith made it to the championship game against North Central and gave them everything they had in the regulation period. North Central was able to win the game in overtime. “I was so proud of the effort the ladies gave in that championship game. To get the game to overtime shows how well our team played, and how much they improved throughout the year,” said Coach Rosekopf.
Off the court, the Lady Eagles were able to minister in several different ways. . The ladies were able to collect items for the Restoring Hope Village ministry in South Africa. The team was able to put on a basketball clinic for the girl’s home in Toledo, Iowa. The team also was able to put on a chapel service for Woodcrest Baptist Academy in Fridley, Minnesota. Throughout the entire year, the team displayed great attitudes and testimonies as they represented God, Faith, and each other.
Lindsie Poorman and Meghan DeBerg were named to NCCAA DII First Team All-Region. Katherine Michalski was named to the Second Team All-Region. Meghan DeBerg received NCCAA DII athlete of the week in the month of February. Emily Johnson, Christie Weiberg, and Julie Huntrods received NCCAA Scholar Athletes award.
Lindsie Poorman led the team in scoring (296) and steals (64). Meghan DeBerg led the team in rebounds (297), blocks (81), and field goal percentage (42.8%). In just her two seasons at Faith. Meghan set the career blocks record with 164 at 3.28 per game. Meghan led the NCCAA DII in blocks and was top 5 in rebounds. Katherine Michalski led the team in free throw percentage (78.8%), and tied with Ally Gittins for assists (91). Ally Gittins led the team in three pointers made with (26). Some of the highlights of the team’s final statistics are finishing 4th in the nation in assists per game (13.8), 2nd in the nation in blocks per game (4.4), 2nd in the nation in scoring defense (50.2), and 3rd in the nation in defensive 3pt. FG% (23.7%).
DeBerg, Poorman Selected to All American Team
(3/10/10) Langhorne, Pennsylvania – The 2009-2010 NCCAA II Basketball Women’s All American recipients were named on Wednesday at the women’s basketball national tournament at Philadelphia Biblical University. Faith’s Lindsie Poorman, an NCCAA II North Central Region First Team selection, was selected to the All American Second Team for her play this last year. Faith’s Meghan DeBerg, an NCCAA II North Central Region First Team selection, was selected as an All American Honorable Mention for her play this last year.
Lindsie and Meghan helped lead Faith to a 16-12 record this year, and the #2 seed in the regional tournament. Lindsie and Meghan led Faith in scoring 20 out of the 28 games. They led Faith in rebounding 26 out of the 28 games. Lindsie led Faith in points and steals while Meghan led the team in rebounding and blocked shots. Meghan recorded 12 double double’s. Meghan’s game high’s in each category were 26 points, 17 rebounds, and 7 blocks. Lindsie recorded 7 double double’s. Lindsie’s game high’s in each category were 20 points, 16 rebounds, and 8 steals.
Lindsie is a senior this year in the elementary education program. She will be doing her student teaching next fall. “I am so thankful that Lindsie made the sacrifice of putting off her student teaching until next fall so that she could play basketball both semesters. Lindsie was a great captain, leader, and basketball player, and I am thankful that she received such high honors for her play,” said coach Rosekopf.
Meghan is a sophomore in the Biblical studies program. She will be leaving Faith after this year to pursue a nursing career at Des Moines Area Community College. Meghan had a record setting career, setting new career marks in total blocks, blocks per game, and new season highs in rebounds per game, blocks, and blocks per game. She also tied the record for rebounds in one game and set the record for most blocks in one game. “Meghan will be missed next year, but I am thankful that she chose to come to Faith these last two years. I am glad that Meghan was able to be recognized nationally for her accomplishments,” said coach Rosekopf.
Lady Eagle's Season Ends in Overtime in Region Championship
(2/27/10) Ankeny, IA – The Faith Baptist Bible College Lady Eagle’s Basketball team lost to #1 seeded North Central University last Saturday in over time of the championship game of the 2010 NCCAA II North Central Regional Tournament. Faith finished the season 16-12. This was Faith’s first winning season since 2002-2003.
Faith had previously lost both home and away to North Central University. On 1/23/10 Faith lost by 9 points. On 2/18/10 Faith only lost by 4 points. Faith was the underdog for this game even though the championship game was at home. Faith had not been in a region championship game for the last 9 years. With a lot of added pressure that could have been on the Lady Eagle’s minds, the game was played at a championship level. Five minutes into the game, the score was tied up 10 to 10. With a few more ties and lead changes, Faith took a 25 to 22 lead into the half.
In the second half, Faith came out strong to take the lead. Faith’s biggest lead was 7 points with 10 minutes to go in the game. Then North Central went on an 8-0 run for the next 4 minutes. Faith found themselves down 4 points with one minute and 23 seconds left in the second half. Faith’s Meghan DeBerg hit two clutch free throws to bring the game to within two points. Faith got a defensive stop and Christie Weiberg hit a jump shot to tie the game up with 17 seconds left. North Central called a time out to set up a play, but Faith was able to get a stop as North Central missed at the buzzer. North Central out scored Faith in the second half 24 to 21
Overtime was much of the same for the first 3 of the 5 minutes. North Central scored first, but Faith was able to match it. North Central missed the next shot, and Faith made the next shot to take a 2 point lead. Then North Central tied back up. The score was 50 to 50 with 2 minutes to go. Faith then missed and North Central took a two point lead. Unfortunately, Faith was never able to match North Central for the last minute of the game. Faith fouled out of desperation and North Central made their free throws winning the game 57-50. North Central won the overtime 11 to 4. “I could not have been prouder of the effort that my girls gave today. With the pressure of the championship game, they played amazing. To come that close to beating North Central, and get the game to overtime with a big defensive stop, was all I could ask for”, said Coach Rosekopf.
Faith was lead in scoring by Christie Weiberg with 13 points. Lindsie Poorman led the team with 12 rebounds. Katherine Michalski led the team in assists with 5 to go with her 10 points. Meghan DeBerg had 5 blocks to go with her 11 points and 8 rebounds.
Meghan DeBerg and Lindsie Poorman were name to the All-Region First team. Katherine Michalski was named to the All-Region Second team.
Women Advance to Regional Championship with Win Over Trinity Bible
(2/26/10) Ankeny, IA – The Faith Baptist Bible College Lady Eagle’s Basketball team defeated #3 seeded Trinity Bible College last night in the semi-final round of the 2010 NCCAA II North Central Regional Tournament. With the win, the Lady Eagles advance to the regional championship for the first time in 9 years. Faith is now 16-11 on the year.
The Lady Eagles opened the game strong, holding Trinity to just four points in the first nine minutes of play. Faith used their defense to build a 16-4 lead with 11 minutes left in the half. Faith would maintain that lead throughout the rest of the half and lead 30-19 going into the break. For the first 10 minutes of the second half, the Lady Eagles and Trinity traded baskets, with Faith holding a 47-32 lead with nine and a half minutes to play. Trinity then put a scare in the Lady Eagles, putting together a 14-2 run to pull within three with six minutes to play off of four Lady Eagle turnovers. Faith would not be denied, though, ending the game with a 20-10 run to capture the 69-56 victory and advance to regional championship.
Lindsie Poorman and Meghan DeBerg led the Lady Eagles as both recorded double doubles. Poorman scored 20 points and grabbed 16 rebounds and five steals while handing out 5 assists. DeBerg scored 14 points and grabbed 17 rebounds. Katherine Michalski added 13 points and 5 assists as well.
Faith advances to the region championship and will take on #1 seeded North Central University. Faith and North Central met twice during the regular season, with NCU coming out on top both times. The game will tip off at 1:00 PM.
