Women’s Basketball Season Review
The Faith women’s basketball team finished the 2011–2012 season with 9 wins and 18 losses. Seven new players joined three returning players to form this year’s team. Five of the women were also on the volleyball team and were unable to join the team for the start of practices. This year’s team was stronger defensively and on the boards, helping them to win 3 of our first 5 games.
In December and January the women’s team kept working hard, but the inexperience began to show as they faced stronger opponents. The Lady Eagles were able to get 5 more wins during that time, but the losses began to add up as well. Going into February, our team had 8 wins and 11 losses, which was actually 1 more win than last year’s team. February was a tough month, as we played 5 top ten teams. Our team finished February with 1 win and 7 losses.
The Lady Eagles showed much improvement throughout the year. We went into the region tournament as the #4 seed facing the #1 seed North Central University. Our ladies never backed down and played North Central even for the first 12 minutes. North Central, however, ranked #7 in the nation, was just too much to handle, taking a double-digit lead and never looking back. “I really feel that this year’s squad improved throughout the season. We were very young and inexperienced, but we played very well at times. I hope that we are able to have more returners next year and keep taking steps in the right direction,” said Coach Rosekopf.
Faith was led in scoring by Jenna Smith at 12.2 points per game with a total of 329 points. Jenna also recorded her first triple-double this year. Jenna added her name to the Faith record books with steals in a game (14) and total steals in a single season (117). Jenna was named to the NCCAA D2 North Central All Region Second Team and was also an All-Conference Honorable Mention selection.
Most importantly, the Lady Eagles did a tremendous job of representing Christ with their attitudes and actions. Many people commented after the games about their hard work and efforts as well as their testimony on the court. The ladies were able to minister at the girls’ juvenile home in Toledo. They were also a close knit group off the court. When you spend that much time together, it’s always a blessing when they become an extended family.
God has given these ladies many talents, and we are thankful they are following His leading and using those talents for Him. I want to give a special thanks to first-year assistant coach Curt Fincham who led the team in many devotions and preached to the team aboard Shuttle Bus Baptist Church.
